Baker and Kendrick invited to WNBA pre-draft camp

Friday March 31, 2006

Unfortunately, Sherill Baker and Alexis Kendrick won’t be playing in this weekend’s Final Four. But they will still have a lot of business to take care of in Boston this weekend as their sights turn to their professional careers. The WNBA draft will take place on April 5th, and there will be several chances for prospective draftees to show their stuff. Baker and Kendrick have already been invited to participate in Saturday’s WBCA All-Star Challenge. Only 17 Division 1 seniors were invited to participate.

Baker and Kendrick have also been invited to participate in the WNBA’s pre-draft camp on Monday. Only 42 draft-eligible women were selected for this camp, so it’s a great opportunity for an individual to impress the scouts.

You can continue to follow the WNBA draft on their Web site.

Lady Dogs advance to Sweet 16

Wednesday March 22, 2006

Georgia used a 15-0 second half run to pull away from a confident Hartford team and win 73-54 in the second round of the women’s NCAA Tournament Tuesday night in Trenton, NJ. Sherill Baker scored 26 points, and Tasha Humphrey had 24 points and a career-high 17 rebounds to lead the way. Janese Hardrick added 12 points off the bench and helped to fuel the second half run along with Baker.

There have been 25 NCAA women’s tournaments. The Lady Dogs have played in 23 of those tournaments and have now advanced to the “Sweet 16″ round in 16 of them.

Georgia advances to meet UConn in the regional semifinals on Sunday evening in Bridgeport, Conn. - right in the Huskies’ backyard. UConn advanced with a relatively easy 79-56 win over Virginia Tech.

If you need tickets to the regionals in Bridgeport, call the UGA ticket office immediately at (706) 542-1231. Because of the close proximity of the game to UConn, demand for tickets will likely be very high, so the UGA ticket office is your best shot. Act quickly!

Lady Dogs advance to face Hartford

Tuesday March 21, 2006

Georgia pulled away early in the second half and led by over 20 points before beating Marist 75-60 on Sunday. Marist gave the Lady Dogs the fight they expected, and it was Georgia’s intensity on rebounding and defense as well as efficient shooting that made the difference. Tasha Humphrey had 23 points, Sherill Baker added 19 points and nine steals, and Alexis Kendrick nearly pulled off a triple-double with 11 points, 9 rebounds, and 8 assists.

The Lady Dogs move on to the second round to face #11 seed Hartford who upset #6 seed Temple. Hartford is led by forward Danielle Hood. Hood scored 20 points against All-American candidate Candice Dupree, and Tasha Humphrey and Megan Darrah will have their hands full with her. The Hawks only attemped five three-pointers against Temple, so expect them to try to go inside and exploit Georgia’s thin depth in the paint. They will be full of confidence after their upset win, and they should have plenty of fans in the stands.

Hartford is coached by former UConn standout Jennifer Rizzotti.

With her 131st start tonight, Alexis Kendrick will tie Kelly Miller’s Georgia record for career starts.

Should Georgia advance, they will earn the program’s 16th trip to the “Sweet 16″ round where they will face either UConn or Virginia Tech in Bridgeport, Conn. on Sunday evening.

#3 Georgia Lady Dogs vs. #11 Hartford Hawks - Tues. at 7:00, Trenton, NJ. Televised by ESPN2

More about Marist

Tuesday March 14, 2006

Marist College is rallying around their women’s basketball program. “About 200 fans, parents, faculty and administrators joined the Red Foxes at Marist’s Student Center to watch the nationally televised program which announced the 64-team field.” The college is sending a fan bus down to Sunday’s game.

Georgia won a very tough and physical game at Marist in December 2004. The 79-62 final score doesn’t tell the tale. It was only a one-point game at halftime and remain close until the final few minutes. Tasha Humphrey had 26 points and 10 rebounds, Cori Chambers had 20 points on 8-of-9 shooting, and Janese Hardrick had 13 points in the second half to help Georgia finally pull away.

You can learn much more about Marist by visiting their official site or by visiting the Poughkeepsie Journal’s Marist page.

Baker and Kendrick selected for senior honor

Friday March 10, 2006

Sherill Baker and Alexis Kendrick have been selected to participate in the WBCA All-Star Challenge. This is the women’s basketball equivalent of football’s Senior Bowl - a chance for the best seniors to show their stuff for the upcoming professional draft.

Hopefully both will be unable to participate - the event is held during the Final Four weekend in Boston (because the WNBA draft is held the next week).
