Looking Ahead To Presbyterian

Monday December 31, 2007

More than two weeks will have elapsed since their last home game by the time the Lady Bulldogs take the court against Presbyterian (1-14) this Wednesday night. It’s the last home game before SEC play cranks up…so plan on coming out to shake off your post-Sugar Bowl buzz and give our undefeated, seventh-in-the-nation Lady Dawgs a proper welcome back. Tip-off is at 7:00 PM at Stegeman Coliseum.

The Florida International Game

Sunday December 30, 2007

70-56, Lady Bulldogs…your 2007 FIU Fun and Sun Classic champs. Florida International knocked down a few threes late in garbage time to prevent Georgia from winning by a much bigger margin. Give the Golden Panthers credit…they were relentless bombers who fought hard in the second half after Georgia sprinted out to a 12-point halftime lead. Ashley, yet another birthday girl (tomorrow), led the way with a career-high 24 points, including a four-of-five performance from three-point land. She also picked up the tournament’s MVP award, joining Tasha on the all-tournament team.

The Lady Bulldogs are now 12-0 on the season and finally headed back to Stegeman Coliseum to host Presbyterian on Wednesday night. It’ll be the perfect chaser for your Sugar Bowl Hot Toddy.

Looking Ahead To Florida International

Saturday December 29, 2007

As odd as it may seem to scratch and claw your way to an overtime win over an on-the-rise ACC program like Florida State in the semifinals of a tournament…only to find a 4-8 Sun Belt Conference team waiting for you in the finals, that’s exactly where the Lady Bulldogs find themselves heading into the Fun and Sun Classic title game. Georgia plays tournament host Florida International at 7:30 Sunday night for the championship.

The Golden Panthers lost by 20 earlier this season to Georgia’s Fun and Sun semifinal opponent FSU and they’ve also dropped a 16-point decision at home to South Carolina. The Lady Bulldogs have a definite height advantage on FIU…so look for the Golden Panthers to attempt to control the tempo of the game and fire away from outside. If Tasha and Angel get good looks down low, you have to like the Lady Bulldogs’ chances in this one.

The Florida State Game

Saturday December 29, 2007

Georgia, 71-62…in overtime. Back when he was the color commentator for the SEC Game of the Week, Van Chancellor used to always say about overtime games: "Usually, one team is happy to being going to overtime and one team is upset. I’m going with the happy team." Well…you better know Georgia was extremely happy to be going to overtime after scoring the final five points (a clutch three from Ashley and then a jumper from Tasha with just over 20 seconds left in regulation) of the game to tie it up. Luckily, it was all Lady Bulldogs in the overtime period. With Angel scoring half of her twelve points in OT, Georgia outscored FSU 14-5 to win going away. Angel also wound up with a career-high 18 rebounds.

Tomorrow night, Georgia faces Florida International in the Fun and Sun Classic title game. FIU advanced to the finals with their 62-56 win over Hofstra tonight. The Fun and Sun Classic championship game tips off at 7:30 and can be heard on Georgia Bulldog Network radio.

Looking Ahead To Florida State

Friday December 28, 2007

All right…The Lady Bulldogs’ opening game at the Fun and Sun Classic in Miami tomorrow night brings us a rematch of one of last season’s most exciting games. Almost a year ago, at The Arena at Gwinnett Center, the Lady Bulldogs trailed Florida State by double-digits with less than five minutes left in the game. That was when Tasha came off the bench with four fouls and pretty much hoisted the game on her shoulders and carried it home. Final score: Georgia - 70, FSU - 65.

This season, the Lady Seminoles are off to a 9-3 start…they’ve defeated their in-state rival Florida and were dealt a ten-point loss by the same Oakland team that gave Georgia such a good scrap a few weeks ago. This SEC/ACC showdown tips off at 7:30 with the winner going on to face either Hofstra or tournament host Florida International on Sunday.

Georgia Still Seventh In Both Polls…New #1

Thursday December 27, 2007

Idle Georgia held on to the number-seven ranking in this week’s AP and ESPN/USA Today coaches’ polls. The big news was, of course, Connecticut moving into the penthouse vacated by Tennessee, who lost a terrific overtime thriller to Stanford over the weekend.
