TOMORROW: Georgia vs. Florida (SENIOR DAY)

Saturday February 28, 2009

Snow? Bah! Even if we get any, it’s not going to stick to the roads. So…basically…there’s no acceptable excuse for you to not come on out to Stegeman Coliseum tomorrow afternoon for the Lady Bulldogs’ regular-season finale. Especially when it’s against those Lady Gators from down in Gainesville. A win tomorrow by the Lady Dawgs would square their SEC record at 7-7 and it could provide a huge morale boost heading into the SEC Tournament. This is serious stuff, Fastbreakers. I’m telling you…the NCAA is looking for any excuse to include Georgia in the field for The Big Dance. Win tomorrow and then turn some heads at the SEC Tourney? It. CAN. Happen.

Above and beyond the game between the lines, however, it’s also your opportunity to say goodbye to our lone senior player, Danielle Taylor. Danielle’s inspiring journey as a Lady Bulldog has seen her transform herself from the last player on the bench as a freshman to senior co-captain. She deserves a lengthy standing ovation. Be a part of it.

Remember, Fastbreakers…the Fastbreak Club Senior Day Social will take place immediately following the conclusion of the game. Fastbreak Club members should head for the door to the left of the Coliseum’s video scoreboard. A Fastbreak Club board member will be on hand to point you toward the Richard B. Taylor Room for all the festivities.

Georgia and Florida tip off at 2:30 tomorrow afternoon. CSS will be here televising the game regionally…while Jeff and Mack can be heard on your local Georgia Bulldog Radio Network affiliate station. (NOTE: Due to a scheduling conflict with UGA baseball, Athens-area fans can hear tomorrow’s game on Magic 102.1FM.) The Fastbreak Club weblog game recap and exclusive photos will be posted a little later than usual tomorrow because of the Senior Day Social…but they’ll be posted by bedtime.

See you tomorrow….and…Let it snow! Let it snow! Let it snow!

The Kentucky Game

Thursday February 26, 2009

“Nothing is over until we decide it is!” – The late John Belushi in National Lampoon’s Animal House

Georgia – 61, Kentucky – 57. How do you like your Lady Bulldogs now, Fastbreakers? How do you like your gutty, gritty Lady Dawgs after tonight? After what they pulled off in Lexington? Wow. Porsha went double-double (11 points, 11 rebounds) and Angel finished a point short of doing likewise (9 points, 11 boards)…but tonight was all about the A-Train. Ashley put this team on her shoulders tonight and flat-out willed them to victory. A career high 26 points. Icing the game with clutch free throws in the closing seconds. Simply a masterful performance. Kentucky had obviously seen the tapes of the LSU game last week and decided, like the Lady Tigers, that they could win the game if they neutralized Ash and made some other Lady Bulldogs step up and shoulder the offense. Sorry, Wildcats…not tonight. But don’t take my word for it. Here’s Coach Landers talking about tonight’s stellar effort by his co-captain and floor general: “It was a gutty performance. We needed someone to gut it out and Ashley did just that. The most impressive piece of it was that they were literally dogging her from end to end trying to keep the ball out of her hands most of the night. She had to work hard just to get the ball and then get it up the floor.” And so we live to fight yet another day…

This Sunday, the Lady Bulldogs take the court at Stegeman Coliseum for the 2008-09 season’s final home game. Come out and help us send senior co-captain Danielle Taylor off with a big win over Florida. We’ll have a Georgia/Florida preview and game links posted right here on your official Fastbreak Club weblog sometime on Saturday.

Don’t stop believin’, Fastbreakers…

The Auburn Game

Sunday February 22, 2009

Auburn – 65, Georgia – 59. The way this season has turned out thus far for the Lady Bulldogs, you can forgive them if they’re not in the mood for “Nice job” or “Way to hang with ‘em” after giving the third-ranked team in the country everything it could handle this afternoon. But with the losing streak extending to five games, you have to wonder if the mythical NCAA Tournament “bubble” has any air left in it as far as Georgia’s fate is concerned. Running the table in the last two games would leave the Lady Dawgs with a 17-12 overall record and a .500 winning percentage in conference play. From there, you have the opportunity to go to the SEC Tournament and make a little noise. This is obviously “glass is half-full” speculation…but you have to keep your eyes on the prize. No matter how out of reach it may appear. The good news coming out of today’s loss to Auburn is that the Lady Bulldogs looked like they’re not ready to concede anything. And if they aren’t giving up, then the Lady Bulldog Nation shouldn’t give up either.

Angel led the Lady Dawgs with 17 points en route to yet another double-double (with 14 rebounds). Porsha also finished with double figures in scoring with 13 points. Now it’s on to Lexington for the Lady Bulldogs as they will take on Kentucky next Thursday night in their final regular-season road game. We’ll have a Georgia/Kentucky preview and game links posted here sometime on Wednesday. Keep the faith, Fastbreakers…

TOMORROW: Georgia vs. Auburn

Saturday February 21, 2009

Riding a four-game losing streak is so not when you want to go back to The Plains and face a hungry-for-revenge Auburn team. But that’s the hand the Lady Bulldogs have been dealt for tomorrow afternoon. So now it’s gut check time. Can our Lady Dawgs, faced with a season that’s threatening to skip off the rails, go into what will absolutely be a raucous, hostile environment for a visiting team and somehow sneak out with a “W”? We’ll all find out tomorrow.

The Lady Bulldogs and Lady Tigers will tip off at 3:00 tomorrow afternoon at Beard-Eaves Coliseum, located on campus at Auburn University. Fox Sports Net will televise the game…featuring our own living legend Teresa Edwards handling the game analysis. You can also listen to the game on your local Georgia Bulldog Radio Network affiliate station. NOTE: The Georgia/Auburn game can be heard in the Athens area on Magic 102.1 FM (due to AM960-The Ref carrying tomorrow’s Georgia/Youngstown State baseball game). Your official Fastbreak Club weblog will have a game recap and links posted sometime tomorrow evening.

"Getting To Know…Teresa Edwards"

Saturday February 21, 2009

tee2 Fastbreaker Karen Sugrue sent along a link to a fantastic Gwinnett Daily Post profile of Lady Bulldog and Olympic legend Teresa Edwards (pictured). “Tee” doesn’t do all that many interviews and this one’s a keeper. You’ll learn everything from her take on the evolution of women’s basketball (both on and the professional and amateur levels) to the name of the last movie she checked out. A clickable link to the interview is provided below…and thanks to Karen for the heads-up!

Seen At Stegeman: The LSU Game

Thursday February 19, 2009

LSU – 57, Georgia – 46. I’m telling you right now…If I’m Nell Fortner, Pat Summitt, Melanie Balcomb, or Amanda Butler, I don’t want to see LSU in my bracket at the SEC Tournament. This is one tough, agile, athletic, and, of course, well-coached Lady Tiger team that seems to be hitting its stride at just the right time. It helps when your opponent has yet another lengthy dry spell on offense that enables you to go on a big run, as was the case tonight for Georgia late in the first half and early in the second. But in the first five minutes, the Lady Dawgs were “D”ing-up on the Lady Tigers and they responded by just flat-out knocking down some shots. They hit shots with hands in their faces. They hit shots with the shot clock running down. Still, Georgia only trailed by seven at the half…and they trimmed the LSU lead down to three a couple of times midway through the second half. However, that big, momentum-shifting three-pointer or steal-and-layup just never materialized. The unhappy result, despite Angel’s 15 points/15 boards double-double, is the first four-game single-season losing streak in the Andy Landers era at the University of Georgia.

Now it’s on to Auburn as the Lady Dawgs and Lady Tigers will hook it up Sunday afternoon on The Plains. We’ll have a Georgia/Auburn preview posted here sometime during the day on Saturday.

TOMORROW: Georgia vs. LSU

Wednesday February 18, 2009

van For the first time in years, “The Van and Andy Show” is rolling back into Athens. When Van Chancellor (pictured) left Ole Miss to coach the WNBA’s Houston Comets, he spent his off-seasons as the color commentator/analyst for FOX’s SEC Game of the Week broadcasts. It was always a treat when Georgia played in the Game of the Week because you knew at some point Van was going to end up interviewing Andy…and the results were always hilarious. The two good buddies will get their laughs in during pre-game festivities tonight…but then it will be all business. These two coaches both need this game, big-time. Right now, Andy’s Lady Bulldogs (5-5, SEC) trail Van’s LSU Lady Tigers (6-4, SEC) by one game in league play. With the larger-than-usual number of regular season losses both teams have suffered, it is absolutely imperative to end up with a winning SEC record if they want to sneak into the Big Dance in March. Long story short: This is the biggest game of the season so far.

If you’re a University student and you can manage to pull yourself away from your PlayStation or “Grey’s Anatomy,” you can score some free pizza and and a “Beat LSU” t-shirt tomorrow night. Just be one of the first 300 students at the Coliseum for the game. Everybody else, Fastbreakers included, you know the drill. The stakes are high and the Lady Dawgs need your spirit and your loud mouths for this one. Georgia and LSU will tip things off at 7:00 tomorrow night. If you can’t make it, tune in to your local Georgia Bulldog Radio Network affiliate station. We’ll have a game recap and exclusive photos right here on your official Fastbreak Club weblog a couple of hours after the final buzzer.

The Vanderbilt Game

Sunday February 15, 2009

Vandy – 80, Georgia – 64. And you know what? The race wasn’t even any good, either. Despite losing Porsha to fouls very early in the second half, this one was still looking good for the Lady Dawgs right up to the 10:00 mark. When a ridiculous four-point possession (a made basket by Vandy and a supposedly “simultaneous” foul by Georgia) put the Commodores up 51-47, the wheels came off. They outscored us 29-17 from that point on. A sensational 22-point performance from Danielle paced the Lady Bulldogs offensive attack, with Angel and Christy scoring 17 and 14 respectively. Ashley only scored seven points today but, in the process, she became Georgia’s 30th 1,000-point career scorer. Congratulations, A-Train!

The loss drops Georgia to 15-10 overall, 5-5 in SEC play.

LSU comes to town next Thursday night. We’ll have a game preview posted by Wednesday.

TOMORROW: Georgia vs. Vanderbilt

Saturday February 14, 2009

georgianascar Was the week off long enough for everyone to take a few deep, cleansing breaths? Hope so…because there’s a lot of season left to be played. We get it going again tomorrow afternoon against Vanderbilt in Nashville. The way Georgia’s looked the last couple of games is enough to make you wish it was back in the day and that a nice cupcake with an ugly W-L record was up next. Alas, there are no “slumpbusters” in the SEC this season. As we’ve found out on a couple of occasions, anybody in this league is capable of jumping up and whooping somebody on any given night. The good news is…last time we played Vandy, they found that out about the Lady Bulldogs. Of course, it’ll be a whole new ballgame tomorrow. Going up there…to that building…is never an easy assignment. But this is the right time to right the ship. The Lady Bulldogs (5-4 in SEC play) definitely want to stay on the good side of .500 in the conference.

National TV tomorrow! The Georgia/Vandy game will be shown live on ESPN2 at 1:00 PM. It’ll be over in time for you to not miss a single lap at Daytona. (Hey, a Lady Dawgs/Daytona 500 doubleheader is about as good as it gets!) And remember, you can always turn down the sound and listen to Jeff and Mack on your local Georgia Bulldog Radio Network affiliate station. Check back here tomorrow night for a game recap and links.
