Seen At Stegeman: The Oklahoma Game

Sunday November 15, 2009

Georgia – 62, Oklahoma – 51. If you’ve been keeping up with Georgia’s recruiting and  off-season signings, you know that the future for the Lady Bulldogs is very bright. Today, they served notice: Don’t be too quick to write off the present. Of course, one game is far too small a sample size to determine whether or not this young Lady Dawgs squad is progressing ahead of schedule…but as far as opening day wins go, you’ll take it anytime. Georgia jumped out to an early lead and held onto it until the final buzzer. Oklahoma, being a top-notch program with a Final Four pedigree, made several runs…but a poised and determined Georgia team was able time and again to hold their ground and deny the Sooners a lead.

Porsha Phillips led the Lady Bulldog attack with her finest game in a Georgia uniform (a double-double, 15 points and 12 rebounds). Jasmine James looked like she was born to play SEC basketball as she also scored 15 points in her Georgia debut…including a highlight-reel reverse lay-up that brought the crowd at the Coliseum to its feet. The veterans also did their part in contributing to a memorable opening day: Angel Robinson scored a dozen points and Ashley Houts tallied 11 points while playing her customary 40 minutes and frequently leaving her feet to take a charge or deflect a Sooner pass.

Next up for the Lady Dawgs is a trip to Chattanooga next week for a Thursday night date with the Lady Mocs at The Roundhouse. We’ll have a Georgia/Chattanooga preview posted sometime on Tuesday.
