Low County Boiled…LSU – 62, Georgia – 54
It sounds like this one was real frustrating. We were hosting a birthday party today…so I was only able to check in on the game periodically. It seemed like every time I looked in on the game, we were only down a basket or two. Apparently the Tigers got the final margin up to eight points in the final moments when Georgia had to resort to fouling. In any event, the hope now is that the Lady Dawgs find a way to bounce right back…to make this loss simply a bump in the road and not the start of a losing streak. You had a feeling, though…the way LSU had been playing everybody so tough…that it was only a matter of time until the Tigers ruined somebody’s afternoon. The schedule still tilts in Georgia’s favor the rest of the season…it’s just a matter of getting out there and getting it done. Here’s today’s official game recap, courtesy of Georgiadogs.com:
BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) – Theresa Plaisance scored 13 points, grabbed nine rebounds and blocked three shots, and LSU snapped a snapped a two-game skid with a 62-54 upset of No. 9 Georgia on Sunday.
Plaisance, whose late-game failure at the foul line marred an otherwise dominant 20-point outing in a last-second loss to Tennessee on Thursday, came through in the clutch this time. She converted a strong inside move with 1:33 left to give the Lady Tigers (14-10, 5-6 Southeastern Conference) a 55-52 lead, and her defensive rebound inside the final minute forced the Lady Bulldogs (20-4, 8-3) to start fouling.
Jean Kenney closed an 11-point performance with six free throws in the final 1:04 to help seal the victory.
LSU’s Danielle Ballard grabbed a career-high 15 rebounds, including eight on the offensive end to keep possessions alive.
Jasmine Hassell led Georgia with 18 points and tied a career high with 12 rebounds.
Quotes from Andy Landers
Opening Statement…
"Unfortunately, we didn’t start this game locked in like we wanted. In the first five minutes, (Adrienne) Webb gets two threes early and (Bianca) Lutley gets fouled on the drive for the three-point play. The things that we needed to do to win were no threes for Webb and (Danielle) Ballard can’t drive the basketball. Long story short, we gave up nine points in the first five minutes of the basketball and I thought we weren’t locked in and did not get the job done. Two timeouts later we’ve locked in and we played for 35 minutes but then Webb gets two more field goals so we’re locked but we didn’t start the game like that."
On their field goal percentage…
"We got some good looks and I thought we got some close ones in the first half that should have gone in and would have really changed the temperature at halftime. In the second half, we had more jumpers but really good ones that we didn’t get to go down. We shot the ball 73 times but not very well. We scored one more field goal than they did, but we got pounded on the line."
On the second half…
"I thought the critical point in the second half was when the score was 44-42. I think we had five stops in a row, which gave us possession five times in a row, and we had gotten the momentum. Unfortunately, we turned it over twice and made poor decisions in transition."
On their overall performance…
"There’s no question we played hard, and for most of the day, we played smart. We didn’t hit shots and missed some good looks at the basket and we played hard and smart. We switched from man to zone and had success when we switched. It’s not like we played horrible but you have to give LSU credit, and they took it inside like they had to do and it worked in the second half."
The Lady Bulldogs will now get to enjoy a rare “off” week before heading down to Gainesville for this season’s rematch with Florida. We’ll have a Georgia/Florida preview posted right here sometime during the day on Friday. According to the stats, LSU took 23 foul shots, we took 10. That is ridiculous!

As Jeff says on the radio, Phoebe: “It’s tough to win on the road.” And that (typical) discrepancy in free throws that you see in almost SEC game is certainly indicative of that.
